Stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the State of Georgia, Jefferson County is called Florida's Keystone County. Jefferson County is located between two large and exciting communities; Tallahassee, Florida and Thomasville, Georgia. Accessible by the Florida-Georgia Parkway, Interstate 10 and other major roads, Jefferson County is a small, quiet and relaxing community.

Our pre-history is also preserved in our archeological sites. Our ecological offerings are majestic. Pristine rivers and streams, hunting and fishing preserves, vast woodlands and plantations offer a spectacular and unique identity to Jefferson County. Canoeing, kayaking, bird-watching and horseback riding are popular pastimes.

Jefferson County is one of the only counties remaining in Florida with NO stoplights. At the same time, exciting activities play an important community role. Kart racing and an excellent greyhound dog-racing track are located in Jefferson County. The historic Monticello Opera House hosts a yearlong parade of plays and musical events in the 1890 theater.

The abundance of forests, fields, rivers, and springs offer many opportunities for sports and recreation in Jefferson County. Hike our wooded trails as part of the state-wide 1,400 mile-long Florida National Scenic Trail that passes through the very southern tip of Jefferson County and follows along the Aucilla River. Bike tours are very popular in Jefferson County with miles of scenic country roads shaded by live oaks and forests. Birding enthusiasts will delight in the many acres of protected conservation areas found in Jefferson County. St. Marks Wildlife Refuge toward the coast is part of the extensive Florida Birding Trail.

While Monticello lacks a mall, there are many unique shopping opportunities here, so that you may find that perfect gift or antique. The shopping in Jefferson County is conveniently located in the downtown Monticello area and along main travel routes around the county. Many local members of our thriving Jefferson Arts association contribute unique and creative crafts and artwork that are available at many shops in the region.
